Permission to Quit, Strategically

Unstuck Monthly | April 2025

Q2 renewal is about giving yourself permission to quit, strategically.

Hi, Friend!

Last month we explored creation amidst chaos. This month, I've been thinking about something different: the power of strategic quitting.

Not the kind of quitting that comes from giving up, but the intentional release of what's not serving you to make room for what will. As we enter Q2, there's a hidden advantage here that I've been observing with clients again and again.

The Weight of “Not Quitting”

Last year, I worked with a client who was miserable serving on a non-profit board. The meetings were contentious, the politics exhausting. Yet he stayed because “you’re not a quitter” had been drilled into him since childhood.

Meanwhile, he was dissatisfied with his day job and dreaming about a professional pivot. The side hustle that could lead him there remained just that–a dream–because his limited free time was consumed by board obligations.

“I made a commitment,” he told me during one session. “Walking away feels like failure.”

Sound familiar? We've all stayed too long at something–a job, a project, a relationship–because leaving felt like giving up. But what my client discovered was transformational. (His words, not mine.)

The Inflection Point

During our work together, we reframed his decision point as an “inflection point” rather than a quitting moment. This subtle shift changed everything.

An inflection point isn’t about failure. It’s a strategic assessment of where you are and where you want to go. It’s a productive pause to determine what’s working and what isn’t.

For my client, this meant honestly evaluating:

  • Which activities aligned with his future vision

  • What was draining his energy versus fueling it

  • Which commitments were based on fear rather than purpose

The answer became clear. The board position had served its purpose in his journey, but now it was a drag sucking up all his available energy.

Strategic Release, Not Quitting

Here's what happened next: He respectfully stepped down from the board, using the freed-up time to pursue consulting projects in his target field.

One year later? He launched his own business in that new field, something that likely wouldn’t have happened if he’d remained tethered to obligations that were draining his resources.

This wasn’t quitting. It was a strategic release of weight that allowed him to gain momentum, like a rocket shedding its first stage to reach higher altitudes.

Why Q2 is Your Sweet Spot

There’s something special about where we are right now in the year. The pressure of New Year’s resolutions has faded. The year-end rush is still comfortably distant. It’s the perfect moment for this kind of productive pause.

Q2 offers a unique advantage: enough of the year has passed to see patterns forming, but plenty of time remains to adjust course before inertia takes over.

We can ask ourselves:

  • What patterns from Q1 do I want to break before they become my whole year?

  • What am I carrying that’s no longer serving my goals?

  • What would strategic quitting make room for in my life?

Your Q2 Reset

I'd love to hear what you're considering releasing as you move into Q2. What's one commitment, habit, or belief that might be better left behind?

If you're facing your own inflection point and want thought partnership to navigate it, I have a few spots open for coaching conversations in May. These sessions are perfect for identifying what to carry forward and what to strategically release.

Thank you for sticking with me!

Until next time,
Alex

P.S. If this newsletter resonated with you, I'd appreciate you forwarding it to someone who might benefit from permission to strategically quit something this quarter.

The Self-Determination Connection

Strategic release is ultimately about reclaiming control of your professional journey. This ability to make conscious choices despite constraints is at the heart of self-determination—the core philosophy behind my coaching work.

Self-determination empowers you to recognize what’s yours to carry and what’s better set down. It's about making aligned choices rather than operating on autopilot.

If you're not quite ready for a call but want to assess where you stand on the foundations of self-determination, my Self-Determination Compass assessment can help identify which areas might be holding you back.

Take the Assessment.
